Digital Lotus

12 June 2025

Digital Lotus is a 2m x 1m woven installation exploring the space between traditional craft and digitalisation. Inspired by the Chindi rugs of Maharashtra, historically made from textile waste, the piece continues Khade Studio’s examination of how heritage, sustainability and technology converge in contemporary fashion.

Woven from banana silk (a by-product of Maharashtra’s banana industry), hand-knit studio samples, and secondhand garments sourced in North Shields, the work blends tactile memory with process. A sun-bleached I <3 NY tee, old shirts, and undyed silk come together to render a pixelated image in a familiar pastel pink.

A meditation on slow craft in a fast world, Digital Lotus reflects Khade’s ethos: starting from scratch, weaving stories into fabric, and finding structure through softness.

An original soundscape by musician Sølv slows the pace of viewing, drawing focus to the piece’s texture - and to the rhythm, care, and time embedded in its making.
